There have only been 10 female monarchs in British history who acceded to the throne in their own right. Dr. Ann McGlashan will tell the stories of 4 of them. Mathilda, whose fight for her rightful place on the English throne ignited civil war in 1135; Mary, Queen of Scots and her cousin, Elizabeth I of England, whose 16th century lives tell the story of religious strife, ultimately bringing about the union of the two crowns; and Queen Anne, the last of the Stuart monarchs, who oversaw the union of the parliaments of England and Scotland in 1707.
