Description: Women have run Texas ranching operations since the 1700s. These pioneers’ stories are full of determination, courage and intelligence. Join Dr. Rosalie Beck to study women who came to ranching in different ways: as Latina leaders, as widows who took over ranches, as wives who partnered with husbands, and as inheritors of ranching legacies. From Rosa María Hinojosa de Ballí in the 1770s to Alice King East in the 20th century, this course will explore the stories of these formidable women and the impact they had on the Texas cattle industry.
Instructor Bio: Dr. Rosalie Beck taught history of religion at Baylor University for thirty-five years. She received her Ph.D. from Baylor in 1984 and joined the faculty of the Department of Religion in the fall of that same year. She maintains an interest in religious history but has added Texas history to her “learning zone.” She won many teaching awards while at Baylor and is passionate about continuing to share information, fun and interest throughout the LLL community.
