Currently, there are five “powers” that have political and economic dominance in our world: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The balance of power among them affects nearly every living person by the decisions and actions they take. In the United Nations Security Council, these five entities are the only ones to have permanent seats with veto power. Dr. David Smith will draw together the history of the great power system and how these countries moved into their powerful positions and maintain their standing after centuries of circumstances.
